1979  MK3 - 1.6GL - AUTO

Why Capri's? I have grown to love these cars quite by accident. The story goes like this -

In spring 2000 my husband's MK3 Escort, although faithful and undemanding over the years had got to the point of needing major money spent. At the same time, my faithful workhorse - a grey Orion (even then were a 'Ford family') nicknamed "The Slug" developed a severe thirst for oil that I just couldn't keep up with so both cars had to go. With no savings to replace either we needed two cars, cheap and quickly. I found us two in the space of one week. With the help of my mechanic, we paid £775 for the two. The Capri for my husband was £700 so guess who got the £75 Nissan Micra?

The Capri was in solid condition with only 45,000 miles on the clock, it had spent most of it's charmed life as a weekend car kept in a centrally heated garage. Although the car was not exactly loved by it's new driver, who suffered copious amounts of teasing by his BMW owning work colleagues, who incidentally, almost without exception asked for a go in it on the quiet, it still did the job of daily transport to work here, there and everywhere.
                                       -----------------    ---------------
In 2002 it got put in our garage due to the purchase of a newer, more suitable car and there it stayed for two years, more or less forgotten.
In 2004, having just been through a bit of a MK2 Escort phase, I found myself with nothing to drive and opened up the garage door and took a look. All it needed was a new rear wheel arch and metal replacing around the front headlamp, and it straight away looked a lot more cared for. A replacement bumper corrected it's crooked smile and black Hammerite made the front scuttle and sills look much smarter. The driver's seat was a bit broken and a sharp spring was the cause of several ripped pairs of jeans so replacement Laser seats were fitted in grey, which somehow detracted from the overall beige 70's theme that was going on in the cabin.

It has been my faithful, (that's just given it the kiss of death!) daily driver for nearly three years and although it's not very fast, I can and do go far!
I now love all Capri's, but probably because mine is very ordinary and not exactly top-of-the-range, I have most affection for the most unpretentious ones around.

Unfortunately Melanie sold this Capri in February 07.
We all hope she gets another one in the future.
